We emerge, disappear, return. The events of our lives are onsets in sequences with unknown intervals — moving from a to b to c, or back again. Connections and transitions intersect linear progressions and forward motion. The game allows for testing strategies and plots by combining different actions that adhere to its rules. The path we choose is simultaneously marked by the many we did not take. We leave a trail behind us of possible other routes, sediments of temporal and spatial sequences accumulating in all directions. The whole note marks a pause on the game board. The actual meets the virtual in the hesitation we sense in the gap between 1 and 0. What defines the relationship between this step and the next? When does a point become a line? Through the abstraction of systems for notation and representation, a translation occurs, from signals to symbols. We can close our eyes and hear the shape, feel it. The stone in your hand. The whole note, stretched across the entire interval, marks a presence and fullness—chopped up, divided, and reassembled anew. Life fills the space between birth and death. The heath as a pause in the landscape. The pause as a landscape in music. In Aske Zidore’s practice, composition, game design, and image-making intersect in subgenres that blend the interactive with the performative and the visual. The exhibition Joker/trickster presents a series of new prints and casts, including a modular game board, a quarter rest, and the whole note as a graphic representation—broken apart and reassembled in new sequences in reliefs and prints. The title Joker/trickster refers to the exhibition’s central figure and host, the whole note. The joker/trickster appears in the sheet music, the game board, cast into reliefs, massaged into woodcuts and risograph prints, rolled through limestone and flint, and into the sequenced landscapes as an image of imagination, play, and lightness navigating heavy, rigid systems. The joker’s traversal through the visual and sculptural elements of the exhibition points to sequences that cut across the presented objects, hinting at the possibility of a prescribed action or a corresponding sound embedded within them. According to predetermined rules and systems, the audience can alter elements of the work affecting both visual and sonic aspects such as the direction of the wind, or triggering a lark's song or changing the way light reflects on the water.The title of the work is derived from a poem by the German Romanticist Friedrich Hölderlin. In this work the poet is placed in a central role as the celebrant of the gods and joy. Similarly, in the 3D environments of Livets Midte, the player is positioned at the center, in first-person view, with the ability to control movements and variations in nature.The music is composed for an octet and developed using a systematic approach to notation, where grids serve as the actual music sheets. The musical grids subsequently form the perspective foundation for the landscapes. By giving it a voice, viewers are confronted with the poetry of the perpetual journey that pervades the mechanical routine of these autonomous garden companions, meanwhile invites contemplation of the deeper human connections that can be lost in our daily lives. She is the central note of the Perfect Immutable System. Mese kata thesin, Mese by position. Mese kata dynamin, Mese by function. Rather than looking for knowledge about her, I think of rewinding the history of music and unlearn what surrounds her, trying to forge the musical language I know by making present what was invented as “past” and repair the structure of information I operate with, when speaking a musical language. Rather than looking for her, I look for her; in the broadest sense I view myself as her, one with her, and in turn, with all the historical innovators of all different systems. I imagine her to be complexly self-similar. I imagine that she has been endlessly rewound and that her rewinding is not finished; indeed she is also the unit of creation, and she extends across time. Mese kata thesin. By her position she is part of all systems, changing in structure but still there. Mese kata dynamin. By her function, her position is shifting as she moves to increase her role in music. Mese, is “A”. She is the sun, and her own feminine integrity, and grace. Her understanding of the perfect dynamic of life flows like a solid stream into everything she touches. She is the 8th. More like a physical representation of an act than a coherent and rational object. Her evolution seems completely organic; her secret is very much like that of the octave, not a distinct pitch, but the dynamic potential of that whole system. I began writing in this “past tense” to be able to engage with the history; (I’ve been trying to do something like this for a while, but only recently am I beginning to find my way forward.) There is an issue that is central, and it’s not about the notes but the way they appear together, in response to the questions I’ve been asking of the music. The reediting, the rediscovery of information is not difficult, really. I am aware of her, have been for a long time, have long time circuits that are embedded in my being that speak of her when I compose. I can’t really see her now, but I know she’s there. I want to “replace her with what she never was, but became”. Language is relevant to me now. Sometimes the activity of typing it out will help the language move towards what it never was, but becoming. I am not inventing a new language, I am extending a lost one. When I write it helps the language understand me. It provides context for my understanding of everything, and while I’m able to access her knowledge now I don’t think I can ever truly lose her.
